Multiple women who were formerly detained in the Xinjiang internment camps have publicly made accusations of systemic sexual abuse, including rape. In February 2021, BBC News reported eyewitness accounts of systematic rape of Uyghur women in the Xinjiang internment camps. Male and female inmates are not included in most national surveys of sexual victimization.
Looking across different US government survey sources, for a given year, male adult and youth inmates are estimated to suffer several times more incidents of sexual victimizations than incarcerated females.
